Make an Elvis Song into a book contest

Guest post by a fellow Author Mimi Barbour

**After I listened to an old Elvis Presley hit called “She’s Not You”, I couldn’t get the words out of my head. Finally, it came to me. The sentiments were so beautiful that the story they told should be written. So, I wrote the first chapter and the song stopped haunting me. I released book #1 of the Elvis Series late in Nov.

When it came time to decide which of Elvis’s song should be chosen for Book #2, I decided who better than the readers themselves to make the choice.

Romance is in the Air

Welcome to Romance is in the Air Blog Hop. To celebrate the season of romance and one of my favorite special days Valentines day I will be giving away a $25 Amazon Gift Card and one eBook of my new release and the first book of a brand new western romance Series. THE ONE!

Margaret Gordon was a prominent Seattle surgeon until a slip of her knife left a young boy without a future. After being fired, she returns to her family ranch, the perfect spot to hide out from everyone and lick her wounds, with no one around but her horse.

Margaret has never considered herself a horse person. In truth, though, she understands horses better than people. When Joe Wilde, a widower, drives up one morning with a teenage boy and a horse with a problem, Margaret turns into the klutzy misfit she used to be, and the torch she silently carried for Joe all through school is rekindled. However, when smooth-talking Joe convinces Margaret to work with the temperamental horse, she grows closer to Joe's son, Ryan, and soon learns the horse's issues are rooted in problems between the two--especially Ryan's anxiety over the fact that his father is now dating a woman who's only interested in the sexy Joe Wilde, not his misfit of a son.

Ryan wants Margaret to be his mother, so he takes matters into his own hands, setting Margaret in his father's path every chance he gets. Even though sparks fly and sizzle between them, Joe believes Margaret has despised him all his life, and he decides all his rebellious son needs is a mother. When Joe proposes marriage to the wrong woman, his son takes off into the wilderness with only a backpack and a feisty horse.

To Joe's surprise, it's Margaret who saddles up her horse and heads off alone with him over a hundred miles of wilderness in a race against time and the elements to find his son. With Ryan's life in jeopardy, will Margaret be able to put aside her differences with Joe and realize that he's The One?

Character Interview: Maggie McCafferty

*Coming Soon, Book 2 of the Walk the Right Road Series, Lost and Found. Remember Maggie McCafferty, Richard's Wife, this loveable woman who managed to get herself in so much trouble with Marcie in, The Choice. Today I’ve included a character interview of Maggie McCafferty, and she is the main character in Book 2, Lost and Found. For those of you who have read The Choice, you will remember loveable innocent Maggie who wanted nothing more than to protect those she loved from Dan. Lost and Found, is Maggie’s story.

Their Loss Tore Them Apart. Will Their Enemy Bring Them Back Together?

Character Interview: Maggie McCafferty
You suffered a terrible loss, could you tell the readers a little about what happened?
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
I understand. But in your grief you packed up your child and left Richard. What made you decide to leave instead of working out your issues?
“He wasn’t there for me. He became a stranger I didn’t know. All I wanted was for him to hold me, love me, and comfort me. And he couldn’t do that. He stayed out all night, started drinking. I couldn’t take the blame anymore, and blame is all I saw when I looked in the mirror. I didn’t need Richards reminder that it was all my fault. Even though he didn’t say those words he said it with each passing glance, the way he left a room when I entered, and the fact he couldn’t stand to touch me.”
When a place for rent in Gardiner became available, that small house, I took it.  Because I believed it would be better and we’d be better off without Richard.
And how is that going for you?
“Well not so well. Richard cancelled all my credit cards. He seized my SUV, and he emptied our bank account so I’ve no money. I had a small savings account in my name, but its almost empty.”
Will you and Richard be able to work out your differences and reconcile?
She let out a heavy sigh. “I hired a lawyer. He’s a nice man and he’s put together a separation agreement. He warned to play fair, even up against Richard’s shark he hired. I’m just trying to get some support, what I’m entitled, just a little. But Richard’s such a hardass  he’s not even being reasonable. He kept everything, he has all the money stashed away so I can’t touch it. So I’ve filed for divorce.
Well that’s too bad. You and Richard as a couple--there was a lot of love there.
“Sometimes the crap life deals gets in the way.”

A Valentine's Story - I Matter to Him

A Valentines Day short story about Marcie and Sam, two characters from my new release, The Choice, Walk the Right Road Series, Book 1

I Matter to Him

“Candles, wine, and what’s this?” Marcie lifted a silver plate warmer.

A light breeze drifted in the open patio doors fluttering the thin gauze of her white swimsuit cover. She peered up at Sam when he didn’t answer. He never failed to take her breath away. The way he looked in his white cotton shirt, his khaki shorts as he lit the candles on the small table in their beachfront suite in Mazatlan.

“What’s the occasion?”  Marcie touched the pink roses with sprigs of baby’s breath in the center glass vase. She leaned over and breathed in the perfume and glanced shyly up at Sam. His wavy hair had lightened from the two weeks they’d spent in the bright Mexican sun. His tanned face appeared relaxed as if he’d left all his worries behind. But then she still couldn’t believe he resigned from the DEA. And after the investigation collapsed, he whisked her away protecting her as if he could shelter her from everything.

“Valentine’s Day, did you forget?”

Maybe it was the way she stood so still and watched him that had him striding around the table and lifting her long windswept hair over her tanned shoulder. She leaned into his touch and needed to breathe. He was so damn good-looking, and still turned every woman’s head. But Sam was faithful to her. So it shouldn’t surprise her he’d plan something like this, but old wounds were hard to shake. With Dan, the one who fooled her, she’d told herself a hundred times it didn’t matter each time he ignored her on those special days. And she’d let him.

“Hey babe are you crying?” She reached for his wrist after he wiped away her tears.

“Will I ever get used to what an amazing man you are, I matter to you. And I can’t help this. Because I can’t believe I found you. That you love me. And you never turned your back on me—not once. Even after you found out what I’d done.”

He didn’t smile but the heat from his mesmerizing blue eyes left no doubt he’d move heaven and earth to be with her. Marcie kissed his palm when he cupped her cheek. And she allowed him to pull her into his solid arms as he rested his chin on top of her head.

“So what’s for dinner?” She linked her fingers with his. He slid out her chair— helped her sit, and rested his hand possessively—protectively on her bare shoulder, when the wide neckline of the soft cotton slipped down, exposing the thin purple bikini strap.

“Maybe I should change.” Marcie started to get up, but Sam leaned down and touched his lips with hers.

“No. You look fabulous, all sexy under that sheer dress you got going on there over that band aid you call a bathing suit. It’ll be less to peel off that sexy body of yours.” His smile was intoxicating as he lifted the metal plate warmer. “Rack of lamb, asparagus with hollandaise.”

“Mm” Marcie scooped back her hair and breathed in the fragrant aroma. “I’m starving. Thank you for doing this. I should have thought of it.” The truth was she had but a lingering fear of rejection poked its ugly head, like an unwelcome guest. Take a chance and believe was something she worked on with Sam—every day. Not once had he used her. He was the genuine knight she’d always asked for. And she loved every moment they spent together, whether sleeping, talking, sitting or just holding hands.
The candles flickered in the dim room as the sun lingered at the edge of the ocean—the perfect horizon—the perfect romantic setting with her Mr. Right.

Sam uncorked the light blush wine and filled her glass. The fruity aroma she’d loved the first few times in Mexico, but lately turned her stomach. Sam held up his glass. “To the most beautiful honest woman who turned my life upside down and made me believe once again that truelove’s possible.”

Her throat thickened and she tried to swallow past the lump wedged in her throat. She’d barely shed a tear her entire life, but since meeting Sam it felt as if she constantly blinked back that endless sting of tears burning her eyes. She wasn’t one of those weepy women, so why? Maybe, for the first time in her life she had a man who truly loved her—who truly believed in her.

“I love you. Damn you—look what you do to me.” Her hand trembled as she raised her glass and touched his. When he took a drink she didn’t. She set down her glass, and dropped her gaze to her plate. Picking up her fork and knife she cut into the lamb, took a bite and nearly groaned as the savory tender lamb melted in her mouth. All the while she could feel his eyes burning into her.

She swallowed as she looked up. Sam tilted his head and swirled the light peachy colored wine in his glass. “Something up?”

Marcie blinked and wiped her mouth with the blue cloth napkin.

“You’ve not had a sip of wine in a week. And don’t think I haven’t noticed you turned two shades of gray each time you get a whiff of that Mexican food wafting in from those outdoor stands. And you’ve been tired, unusually so. But then again, after what you’ve been through I just thought…” He shoved an index finger at her glass. “And you’re not drinking again. You feeling okay?”

She bit her lip. Set down her fork and rested her napkin in her lap. Marcie warmed as she met the gaze of the man she loved, who didn’t have a dishonest bone his gorgeous body. “Sam how do you feel about kids?”

Medicine Wheel

Medicine Wheel November 14. The winds have picked up and are doing their best to wreck the wheel. I've since repaired the center. It's still standing now. On the right is a photo that was sent to me by a friend of Mishi's. This is the medicine wheel Mishi built on the beach last year, which lasted until the next high tide.

The Medicine Wheel--We've had a few storms come through the last few days. This morning again the medicine had been wrecked. But I've since repaired it, and once again its standing strong.  I'll post another photo later today.

The blog I wrote below is about a medicine wheel built by a wonderful native woman I met last week Panji Mishiikenh Quay, which means Little Snapping Turtle Woman but most know her by Mishikeenhquay or Mishi for short. Since my original post, part of the medicine wheel had been damaged. Mishi repaired and has since, along with other members of the community, added to this medicine wheel. On Thursday Mishi had to leave this island and return home, we will miss her, but she's promised to return.

The Medicine Wheel

On a small island where I live in the Northern Gulf Islands, I met a native woman by the name of Mishi, visiting from Massachusetts. She introduced me first to the Eagles who have a nest just behind my house. They are most extraordinary this mate/pair that have been together for over 20 years. What I find amazing about Eagles, is they mate for life.

On Saturday Mishi, along with her sister built a medicine wheel on the beach in front of my home.

A medicine wheel is a physical manifestation of spiritual energy. The circle of life appears like a wheel as seen in the photo’s I’ve included in this blog. Spiritual energy using all the elemental forces, calling in the four directions. It is a wheel of protection allowing us to use surrounding energy and gathered into a focal point to commune with “Spirit—all elemental forces.”

Mishi was guided to build this medicine circle, in this specific spot on the beach. As she said to me “it wanted to be up here.” She listened and constructed using the materials provided by the land. Each rock, each stick had a specific spot and purpose. Everything was blessed, and smudged with Sage. The construction took all morning.

The wheel was constructed using the four directions. East, the rock color is yellow which is a new beginning, the rising sun, air, flight and springtime. South the rock is red, which symbolizes youth, fire, passion the time of the Summer. West rock is black, adult hood, the fall season, setting sun, water and emotions. North is white, which is the end of the cycle, purity and wisdom, earth, wintertime--a time to stop and listen. Then begin again in the East, yellow, new beginning. The circle of life.

Rock placement was not easy. Mishi and her sister scrounged the beach for hours seeking the materials, the right colored rocks, and the beach wood needed to construct the medicine wheel. Every stone was smudged with sage. Tobacco was provided in an offering for the rocks. Mishi listened to each rock—stone, to tell its proper placement. Some fit some didn’t. Several times during construction, the two women, were interrupted by the pair of Eagles who live here. The Eagles watched from their tree overlooking the beach. The murder of ravens and the sea lion, the otters in the Ocean all made their presence known. They knew why she was here to build this circle. In that spot. And why now. But did we?

The center of the circle is the pure heart, spirit. Everything extends from the circle and everything comes together in the middle.

This medicine wheel was created and blessed for Truth, Honesty and Healing. What’s amazing is why it had to be here? A place in need of healing?

I love Native American culture, and I felt truly blessed to have this medicine wheel on the beach in front of my home where I can visit every morning.
